Thanks again for the excellent help. I took the shafts to a shop to have the old bearings pressed off and the new ones pressed on. There was no retainer on the shaft behind the bearing. The bearing is instead held in place with a tapered inside diameter that matches that of the shaft. So who knows where the retainer ring really is...
Anyway, I'll hopefully get things back together and adjusted tonight. Thanks a lot for your excellent descriptions. I'll be referring to them often.
