Weird behavior or temp gauge (or overheating problem) 200 1983

Given that you can reproduce it quite easily, I bet there really is a problem. The easiest thing to do would be to find someone with an infrared thermometer. You also could buy one yourself, or install a calibrated temp gauge.

If the engine is really overheating, I'd suspect a blown head gasket.
