How cold did it get, in Kansas? What is the condition or percentage of Antifreeze to Distilled Water? It is possible that ice formed and you may have had a hotspot from lack of circulation. I think Poolman has a valid point, if the Thermostat wiring is making positive metal-to-metal contact.
