Approaching a light, intending to make a left hand turn down a long left turn lane. Someone in the line of stopped traffic in the straight/right turn lane decided to be kind to another motorist exiting a gas station on the right, left him enough room to come out, and he only gets about his front half out in the lane I'm doing about 25mph down. He was driving an late 80s something Buick sedan, and I my 88 240 DL sedan. I completely demolished his entire left front fender, front bumper and folded his left front tire flat to the road. His door didn't open properly anymore, either. Because I hit him square on the front of my car, my hood was bent up in an upside-down "V" shape, and everything forward of the engine block was pushed back against the engine. The car crumpled exactly as it was supposed to. Nobody was injured in either car, but the insurance company actually gave me the option of whether to take the $2500 for the car and total it, or have the repairs done, which was estimated to be exactly the same. I figured that it would be cheaper to fix this car up than to go car shopping, so in a 2 weeks I was back on the road.

Moral of the story is: For me, I was grateful that I hit this guy with my Volvo vice any other car. For him, and you can pass this on to your kids, the moral is that if somebody tries to be kind and "waves you out", you're still responsible for where your car goes, not the nice guy. Oh, and by the way, the guy that waved the car I hit out into my lane left the scene.
