Very difficult or impossible to retrofit airbags. If you really want air bags, consider a used recent-vintage car that already has them. Don't get too concerned about this air bag thing. To a large extent, if every driver religiously wore properly-fitted seat belts, there would be almost no need for air bags. In many ways, this is a workaround for morons who won't wear their belts. It is the American way: rather than try to adjust a behavior pattern or educate users, we impose more and more workarounds to compensate for that behavior (e.g., back-up cameras for stupid useless vehicles, bailout for McMansion mortgages, more and more exemptions on top of a flawed tax code, ethanol to feed motor vehicles, etc., etc.). Anyway, I digress, good luck with your search.
