The ultimate safety device is an alert, trained, literate, and sober driver. In my four decades of driving, I have seen the overall skill level and state of concern for other drivers drop way, way down (in other words, the moron factor has gone way up). And this isn't romantic "it was better in the old days" nostalgia. Imagine how much safer the roads would be if we combined our modern cars with serious driver education, similar to Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, etc., and serious enforcement of driving infractions.
