'93 240 wagon for son's first car 200 1993

We are just starting our search for a 240 wagon, manual, perferably a '93 with less than 150K miles as our teen's first car. We are hoping to spend under $3K. Am I dreaming? Or is this a reasonable price for which to aim? Also, how do you Volvo experts suggest we go about finding a well-loved brick with good maintenance logs? We've combed the internet sites and have run across a few ads that were perfect ("looking for a good home for my 240", etc) but so far all of those are too far away. We're in Charlotte, NC. Willing to go up to 200 miles or so, but that's about as far as we can roam.
