It is odd that the locksmith didn't go ahead and pick the cylinder to turn it so you could get it out. Maybe he didn't know it comes out by pressing a pin when the switch is in the ON position.
In your situation I believe I would first try to force the cylinder to turn with a screwdriver until I could get the pin pushed down to extract the cylinder. Failing that I would drill the cylinder to extract it. Then buy a new cylinder and key; about $60. Available from Vintage Import Parts, PN 673261 -- lock cylinder for ignition switch with 2 keys.
