Thanks to all for the great information!! This is too funny (or sad) but here it goes. When the guy sold me the car there was a key in the ignition. It was a very narrow key and looked sort of flimsy. The guy said that the previous owner said it might or might not be the key for that ignition. That's when I used the liquid wrench to try to free up the cylinderin case it was the right key and was just not turning. I had to be careful because the key bent and I had to bend it back into shape. I figured it was the wrong key and left it at that. After the locksmith left I put a thin plastic tube into a can of brake cleaner and sprayed it into the lock several times to dissolve the liquid wrench and probably years of crud. Anyway I put the key in, just for kicks, and wiggled it around. It actually turned!! at least to one position. Thinking there must also be a "start" position I turned the key a little harder and it broke off in the lock!!! But the good side is that it broke at the base and left just enough for me to be able to use pliers to get it out. So now I can take the broken key to the locksmith (a different one) and see if he can recreate it. Failing that I can use the info you guys provided to "teach" a locksmith how to get the cylinder out.
