I've been through the same thing. A fully charged battery is no guarantee that it is a good battery. A good battery will hold charge (~>12.2 VDC) after sitting for a day or more and will charge up to ~13.5 VDC with the engine running (meaning the alternator is working).

Your mechanic should have known that.
