Re: Very difficult buying question... 700 88

The Smart is a neat car (I saw quite a few in the Netherlands when I was there in '99), but unfortunately there are no Smarts available in Canada. It's simply too small to be a success in the North American market.

For Rene, I would suggest the 940T. The TDI is an excellent car, with a lot of nice touches (e.g. the glow plugs light up as soon as the doors are unlocked with the remote in order to minimize starting time), and the engine has great torque, but I've learned from experience that a Volvo is ultimately cheaper to own than a VW. If you're only driving 25000km (15,000 miles) a year, fuel costs are likely to be about the same as maintenance in the Volvo. The VW may save you $800 a year, but it may cost more to maintain, and it won't last as long. A 940T will give you close to the same fuel economy as a naturally aspirated engine as long as you resist the temptation to use the turbo boost.

Note also, Montreal is a *lot* colder than Toronto.
