Generally speaking, the VW will be tougher to service, as most FWD vehicles are (compared to RWD Volvo's, that is). I'm not too sure about the 4's, but their V6's are a definite bear - an engine hoist is a requirement for DIY.
One thing to keep in mind - safety. Although the VW crash tests pretty well, after all that's said and done, it's still a smaller and lighter vehicle than a Volvo.
For the record, I was involved in a t-bone accident in my '79 245 last year, in which the other driver blantly ran a red in her '99 Civic. I walked out, more shaken than hurt; she and her 5 year old, which was sitting in the front passenger seat (with no booster and in a car with dual air bags ...), were taken away in an ambulance.
She was traveling an esitmated speed of 45-50 mph at the time of impact.
-- Kane ... that's my opinion.
