How do i check my coil? 1800

Do you get a small spark across the points if you flick them open with the ignition on? I think that usually proves the coil is OK. A big flashy spark usually means a duff condensor. Depending on what points you are using, you haven't actually said what year your car is, you may have left the insulating washers out or got them in the wrong order. That would short them out to the base plate. With one piece points that's not normally a problem.
