I think that you are describing the coil with the armored cable. Not easy to get to the coil terminals. However, try these things:
1)Put a volt meter or test light between the wire that goes to the points and a ground. You should see voltage or the light with the ignition in the run position. If you do, the coil is probably good.
2)If test 1 works, put the meter or the light between the wire to the points and the terminal for the points. Again, you should see voltage or light as you crank the engine.
Check the installation of the points very carefully. It is easy to short the points against the body of the distributor.
