Thanks for an excellent and comprehensive explanation. We do final block decking after the rods are completely finished, so any possible growth is compensated for as a matter of course.

Now, perhaps you could clarify the rod "stretching" thing for me, because I've heard conflicting versions. The one that seems most credible to me is that they do not actually get any longer (or not enough to matter) from mechanical stresses short of the point of cracking -- the growth is thermal in nature, and is more in the pistons than in the rods themselves. Certainly some forged pistons do get .005" or .006" taller and wider with heat (which is why I don't use them in any but the most severe-duty applications).

I have a hard time believing that rods are elastic to any significant extent. What say you?
