I'm looking at a Jen-U-Wine Volvo 1971 140 service manual
If it says 3.33 thick, it's a misprint.

5.6 cc of head gasket volume (.034" x 3.59")
It's .028" x 3.53". Anything wider than the bore gets filled with carbon.

What about the big space around the piston that is above the top ring?
