Is the holley a side-draft carb?

I would have thought that any induction setup for a given motor would
have similar economy, if you can tune it properly. IE a given B20 will
consume at least N pounds of fuel per hour while producing 45Hp at 3000RPM
at part throttle (the typical highway situation).

There will be lots of slop in the equation related to things like throttle
changes or improper metering, but ideally the B20, combustion chamber, cam,
and so on will determine the best fuel economy possible, not the fuel
delivery system itself.

Properly tuned, I don't see how you'd see any real difference between a
SU and a mikuni. I can see tiny improvements from using fuel injection,
just because you may see better atomization and better fuel metering if
you time the injection just prior to the intake valve opening, but these
are the sorts of differences that would require a huge sampling size to
notice. I can't imagine how, *IF* the mikunis are easy to tune to the
same level as SUs (or holleys, for that matter), you'd see any real
difference in fuel economy or performance.

And, let me add, SUs are not hard to tune.

If I had a dyno and a couple weeks of time, I'm sure I could come up with
a custom needle taper that would work perfectly with my wacky B20.

Also, I don't doubt that you have the experience and intuition that would
allow you to tune my B20 to close to ideal much, much faster than I would
be able to, and you may not even need a dyno to do it. Experience,
knowledge, and practice make a huge difference in this sort of enterprise.

I would actually like to hear about the holley, especially if it could be
adapted to the (somewhat) common weber downdraft manifold.

I'd also like think about using the lynx manifold with a pair of carbs like
the mikunis. I'd imagine that the inner vs outer throats would require
slightly different tunings given the length of the runners in that setup.

Lastly, let me add that I think there is a market for a totally self-contained
fuel injection (throttle body style) setup in california to replace
carburetors on cars where people don't want to junk their older cars but
where the state wants the owner to clean up the car's emissions.
