Testing for Spark 200 1979

Since this is your latest post time with your results I will ask the questions.

Did you read the references Art sent you? The .org was detailed in some logical order for a air/fuel problem.

Vacuum Leaks:
Did you feel around the bellows for cracks, splits and if the clamps are properly installed? Did you try to use a flashlight with a mirror for the back side.

I would not jumper out the relays because you need to follow the order that the car uses to get started. If you jump things out and its starts then what? You don't know what turned on and when. You stay lost!

Lets go with that its hitting. Its telling you that you have got things closer.

Timing:
Have you been moving the distributor around within its adjustment before you found the marks off? If you have it would be best to start with it in the middle of the slot.

Unless you have a timing light and spot the light a few degrees advance. But not a full twelve degrees because that is at a higher RPM.

Fuel:

As Art asked. Have you determined a flooded or lean firing?

The choke is the cold start injector. It is only turned on while cranking. Arts reference article states how to check that. The method checks the injector for spray which clears that it may or may not be getting power let alone fuel! Do the test! One big slam dunk test with a big arrow attached!

The starter area was nasty in one of your other post. A loose wire, who knows what?

As I had eluded to: Was fuel relay powering the thermal time switch and cold start injector.

What turns it on? Engine turning sensor. Air flow switch or another type trigger. Someone posted differences which there could be on your model. I'm not aware of when the distributor or even CPS's entered the model years.

Reasons for not jumping around for the relay:

Can it be turned on?

If on? Is the power going to the enrichment device circuit.

If it clicked on and no fuel spray. Your arrow! Fuel

No click check thermal time switch. Open for temperature or bad. Jumper or test with meter to check for power to it. The other arrow! Elecrical

Between the relay and the time switch. Double arrow. Wiring?

One hand on one and one hand on the other. Your are the only thing between them! The loose nut with a wrench! Just Kidding!

Hope this helps you organize your attack against the big Gremlin. Phil
