It's very easy to read the actual mileage from the black box under the hood.
matthewsvolvosite has instructions.

I'm still on the fence with the '95 850 we got last year. Although I got it for next to nothing because it did need a few odds and ends, I'm finding that parts are expensive for my current budget. Will band-aid it together for a while until some cash frees up.
