Jim, I saw the car today and can update you. In the email I simply asked where in MA you live and see if we can keep in touch for tech and moral support. I always work on my cars. Used to be my S70 and wife's 940, now it may be S70 and 850, which is very similar.
Anyway, here's the deal on the car I saw today. It's a '97 855 GLT with 118K miles on the odometer. Has Carfax that comes with it. According to Carfax the car was well maintained (it looks it) and the mileage seems legit, although there is one year when there is only 3K miles covered. Perhaps the odometer gear broke and some actual mileage is missing from the odometer reading? Not sure. Car is very clean inside and out save for some minor things that don't bother me in a 13 year old car. Driver's leather seat has a rip in a seam about 2"-3" long. Otherwise the seats are just about perfect. Right side mirror is cracked. Front left fender has a crinkle, front right fender has a small ding. No rust or ugliness, barely noticeable. Pain is in average condition. Front of hood near grill is sandblasted as usual, but not badly. Some scratches, but not deep, some clear coat fading, but not a lot or bad. In other words cosmetically pretty good. I have no problem with cosmetics at all. Inside the car is almost perfect except for a missing sun visor on the driver's side. Wood paneling is in very good condition and makes the interior much nicer. Now for the problems that I need advice on. Tail gate does not stay up very well. I know the dampers (or whatever you call them) need to be replaced. Is that difficult? I figure the tailgate needs to come off for that. Driver's door has no stops at all. The famous failed weld? How difficult is that? I know a very good welder in my area. That's about it. The car drove and ran beautifully. Shifted smoothly, accelerated strongly (I had it in economy mode) and the engine sounded healthy. No warning lights of any sort showed up. So, very smooth car in pretty good shape. Timing belt done at 67K. No visible oil or other fluid leaks.
