Buying advice wanted

Oh, did I mention that the timing belt was 16K miles overdue? I am not sure why the guy is asking so much. He didn't seem unreasonable. Possibly lack of market research... Anyway, I wouldn't want that car at all. Too rough. I am looking for something that's at least in slightly above average condition. I do not need a project car right now, no matter how cheap.

Well, there are some others out there, but this one was right in my town. I called another prospect, a non-turbo '00 V70. The seller said he is taking it off the market because he began to hear a shudder from a tranny. He is a mechanic and says he does not want to sell the car like that, but will rather drive it until the tranny fails and then put a good tranny in. Too bad, the car looked good and had 145K miles. /any ideas on the tranny in these cars? I know late model RWD cars had a bullet proof auto tranny, but FWD had problems, especially early ones. My S70 is manual, so I am not dealing with any of this. I think the fewer doo-dads a Volvo has the fewer problems. Hence my desire for a non-turbo 940 wagon. They are hard to find, though. I'll take a V70 or an 855 with as few options as possible. Auto transmission is a must for my wife, but other than that... It does not need to be fast (she loved the n/a 940 wagon for her "slow and steady" feel).
