"It is not possible to rotate the crank by hand if a valve is in the way" You give me a glimmer of hope!
Answers to your questions:
1. Yes, cam shafts locked by fixture on rear end.
2. 1/2" socket that bent, was on end of crankshaft holding tool. I used ratchet and pipe to hold.
3. Yes, tensioner bent with belt going backwards (ccw rotation of crank).
4. I was using a breaker bar at the time, not an impact wrench.
5. The spark plugs were NOT out, when I then rotated by hand.
6. I rotated past 90 degrees, then back. (with camshafts locked in reference position, the cam pulley marks do line up with cover slots, with VVT hubs rotated to clockwise limit)
7. Never had crank in zero? ... I don't know. One take-away from all this, is MAKE YOUR OWN REFERENCE MARKS before you start anything.
I am perplexed, how I could have cycled the engine (belt on) and not damaged anything, with the timing 90 degrees out??? After finally finding the crank pulley notches at 90 degrees ccw of zero, I slowly rotated to zero, with spark plugs out. Predictably, #1 piston now much closer to zero.
I sit and think what to do next ... thanks for any input.
