Dyno is the quickest way to do it right. Or G-Tech, or even a stopwatch... but you need some sort of controlled way of experimenting -- seat of the pants is just too deceptive.
Point is, the old "advance until it pings and then back off slightly" method may or may not pertain to any particular motor. Some motors make the best power right on the edge of detonation, but it's by no means a truism.
You need the burn to complete as the piston reaches about 10 degrees ATDC. If it completes at 5 ATDC, you make less power and get worse economy, and it may or may not ping in the process. It all depends what the burn rate is, and that varies greatly with all sorts of factors.
