As soon as the piston passes TDC, the compressed volume increases and pressure drops. Beyond 10 ATDC, it drops fast enough to snuff out combustion, even though pressure remains much higher than the outside air all the way down the stroke and continues to act on the piston beyond the 90 degree point.

I don't know if the optimum burn completion point is exactly 10 ATDC, but it's a good working number.
