SU performance tuning... 1800

Aren't the vacuum advance and vacuum retard hooked up to different vaccum sources? One is hoooked to the manifold, and see high vacuum at idle, almpost none while driving. The other is hooked up to a fitting on the carb near the venturi = so sees higher vacuum at higher loads, very little at idle. Or is that just something I've imagined?
