The 45 or 48m carbs may offer slightly more power at the extreme high end of engine RPM, but the 36mm venturis in the 40's will cause a higher velocity airflow, resulting in better atomized fuel and a flatter torque curve (more usable power in real life) and lower fuel consumption.
The only place that 48mm webers or Dellortos makes any sense is a heavily modified B20 in a serious race car with all the extra weight stripped out, close ratio transmissions, and differential ratios to take advantage of the narrow power band.
