Here’s the scale I use:

Info from:

Notice that Volvo used 45mm carburettors for the 140HP engine.
My own Dellorto equipped B20's did put out more power than a B30E on the same dyno & at the same rpms largely paralleling Volvo's Factory engines.
If you do the math, you will see that two 40DCOE Webers will flow a heck of a lot more air than two SU HS6s: 2 x HS6 = 2 x 1 3/4" = 2 x 44.5 mm = 2 x 13.96 sq. cm. = 27. 92 sq. cm. total area…...
Your maths is flawed, your statement is only true if all 4 throats feed in to a common manifold & can all feed one cylinder at a time. On a typical Weber manifold, they can’t. Likewise with twin SU’s, the front SU can only feed the front cylinders, and the rear SU can only feed the rear pair.
Your anecdote is kind of pointless, you don’t mention the size of the SU’s or the Webers used. Here’s an anecdote of my own: A friend of mine actually fitted a borrowed pair of 40mm DCOE’s to his car, then took them back off & put his HIF6’s back on because they made more HP & here’s why:

Webers only make more power than SU’s when they flow a similar amount of air. 40mm DCOE are the right size for a 1600cc Alfa or similar sized engine, but they are only enough for a standard 2000cc Alfetta.
