De-tuning a B18 444-544

Is that manifold like the ones they use with the Weber conversions? IF so that shouldn't be hard to find at all, huh?
Mike, I'm not sure, but it might well be. Tomorrow looks like good weather, and I might get myself over to a Volvo recycler about 45 minutes from here and see what I can find out and/or find. If I find two, and if they are not too ridiculous in price, I'll bring them home, in case you want one of them. If you don't, I can always return it.
I found the MEN article also, but that set-up is not quite what I'm after. This is more like what I'm thinking.
Mittenhed mentioned something about a governor that acts on spark being preferable to a mechanical centrifugal one. I want to get back to him to ask precisely what he meant. I saw a picture of an electronic unit that appeared to move a rod that acts on the throttle. I'll have to see if I can find that back and find out more about it. Cruise control may be an option if you can salvage one. The off the shelf units are too expensive for me. Do you know if the ones in 240/740s operate through the ECU, or are they just vacuum operated with an electrical control in the steering wheel stalk?
A direct coupler between the crank and the generator head is definitely the usual approach. At the moment I'm thinking of using a clutch and an M40 with a vestigial driveshaft because I happen to have all the pieces, except for the bellhousing, and because, apparently, getting the heavy generator head to get going with the engine at, or near, 1800 rpm, reportedly, can cause quite a bit of shudder. Being able to ease out the clutch may help in that respect. The gear box is probably superfluous, but it would allow me to run the engine at higher revolutions and use the gears for reduction without having to go to a pulley and belt arrangement. There is still a lot more for me to learn before I dive in, but I'll probably start by putting the engine back together again, and then go one step at a time. My experince with projects is that, if you try to figure out everything beforehand, you never get started.
Bob S.
